About

PS2_11

Welcome to 10 Legs! I just arrived here myself recently (September 2013, click here to find out more and check out my first post) and expect to stay for a while. Not in a Mr. Roger’s sort of way but in a, “Hi, take a seat at the bar, or roll up your sleeves and dig in,” sort of way.

I’m Stacey, and this is my blog. I love to cook and I love to eat, but I don’t just love to eat and I don’t just love to cook; I love to think about food, look at it, smell it, and escape in stories surrounding food. I can be inspired by the colors, textures, shapes – the cultural origins, smells and tastes; or I can happily be contemplative and reflective while enjoying a simple meal in solitude. Just as easily, I can be opinionated (thanks Mom) and passionately intense over any meal shared with friends or family! I believe that many of life’s great moments coincide while sharing or celebrating with food. Most people don’t understand the power it has on life’s quality, but those of us that do, are the better for it! Just ask Buddy, my boy dog, how it has changed his life. You can read about him more on the “creative team” page.

As you might have guessed by the blog title (and the illustration on the top of my posts – thanks Pete), this blog is about food AND it involves our dogs, along with their place in my kitchen because when I cook, they are always in the kitchen. Sometimes, that is what motivates me to go in there and causes my husband Tom to stay out (or else this would be called 12 Legs in the Kitchen instead of 10; and trust me, THAT could get crowded). This blog however, for me, is about so much more. It is about commitment and passion. It is about finding time in a busy life to do something for myself while also hopefully, speaking to someone else; you – whoever is out there reading – about something that makes you feel that the time reading was worth the time spent. I rarely regret a single moment spent “in the kitchen” and the stories that make up my world revolve significantly around food.

As with anything, life always comes into play and without inserting the meaningful moments that lead up to eating, we would be left only with full bellies. So, this blog will jump around depending on moods, availability, motivation and something worthy to say. You will hear from me mostly, but sometimes from Tom, and occasionally Ginger or Buddy will take the reins (they too have minds of their own and quite a bit to say; we suggest that when they speak, you sit, stay and listen (Tom and I have become better for doing the same)!

Unlike so many people we know and interact with, Tom and I chose to have furry, four-legged children, rather than those hairless, two-legged kind that are typically spoken about when referring to the trials and tribulations of parenthood. We know it is very different and coincidently, our life is a little different too. Make no mistake though, we too have to abide by their routine and we too sacrifice what is best for us with what is best for them. Their antics at and around the table can be both exhausting and adorable – rewarding or intolerable. They don’t require daycare (well, they do require Debbie, our fabulous dog walker) but they do require love, in large quantities, and they are definitely motivated by food!

It’s that simple.

We hope you enjoy this site and invite you to join us here regularly. I will try to post once a week, but sometimes it might be once every two, deadline dependent. If you click on “follow” at the top of the page, an email will alert you to each new post. We encourage comments, otherwise, how can we connect?! If things don’t make sense in my recipes or you have another tried-and-true method to share, I would love to hear about it. If you have something cool to share, or also have pups and want to tell us about them, we would love to hear that too!

Talk soon!

  1. Ha ha! I so agree about lots of doggie legs in the kitchen being less intrusive than two husband legs 🙂 Looking forward to reading more of your blog.

    • Maybe it is because they are at ground level (not counter height)! It is all part of the mix and the outcome; if only I could teach them (husband and doggies alike) more skills. Tom does do the laundry though and I was just put in my place over trying a load myself. Thanks for your comment!

  2. Found you via A Pug in the Kitchen. Love your dogs and blog title – very cute! Look forward to reading through your blog.

    • Welcome and thanks for visiting. Yeah, my dogs are pretty special little souls; we are so lucky to have them. Stop by again soon; I try to post once a week (more if I have time).

  3. Lovely 🙂 I adore the devotion that you clearly have for your dogs and I can’t wait to pop over to your “team” page to see more about them. There’s nothing like sharing your time with a pup or two – I’m always in the kitchen and wouldn’t be without my yorkie in there too!

    • They give so much love back and I couldn’t imagine not having them keep me company while I cook. You and I clearly have that in common; it sounds like Clemmie keeps you sufficiently entertained while you cook too. Thanks for stopping over.

  4. fun 🙂 Appreciate your visits to food for fun—thank you! Hoping you’ve seen my latest, which just happened to involve a puppy cake. Though the final cake wasn’t ready at that time. Just posted on my deLizious facebook site (please stop by if you can!), but will also put a picture up when I write my next blog post.

Again, loving your writing style. What fun you are 😀

  5. I can’t believe I didn’t reply to this; was busy checking out your clever puppy cake! Thanks, you have a nice style too.

  6. I love your site! The dogs are so cute and the recipes are amazing! I will be back for sure. 🙂

  7. Hi, thought I’d stop by and have a nose, you being a fellow doggie person and all.
Like you, our child has four legs and a permanent fur coat.
Looking forward to grabbing some recipe ideas. See ya!

    • Hey, thanks for stopping by and sniffing around. I find that “dog” people usually have good character. Ginger and Buddy welcome you and we all hope you come by again.

  8. Hi Stacey! The name of the blog is absolutely adorable! I thought its all about children, but now I can see it’s furry little dogs 🙂
    Nice to meet you! 🙂
    Cheers, Mila

    • I am so glad you enjoy reading my blog. I love the story about why you started your blog. Thank you so much for the nomination but I hope you are not offended if I decline? I am bad, bad at chain types of things and have signed up for the blog tour already…I would hate to let you down by dragging out my duties. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you thought about nominating me though.

      • No worries at all Stacey! I know these awards can be time consuming and overwhelming if you already have other stuff going on. Glad you are doing the blog tour! Fun!

  11. I just wanted to say thanks for commenting on my prose. My blog is sort of eclectic with recipes, women’s health and narrative medicine so it sometimes has an identity crisis. It’s nice when anyone wanders out of the recipes to comment. I did my residency training at OHSU in Portland and I love your stories about the Pacific Northwest. I’ll keep reading your prose and recipes. Be well, Tracey
